Getting a bad case of Writer's Block, he meets Charlie Meadows ( John Goodman), an insurance salesman, novelist turned hack screenwriter " W.P. The enthusiastic studio executive tells him to write a wrestling picture. Barton Fink ( John Turturro) is a playwright who has gotten a contract to write movies. His environment is suffocating, as he deals with wallpaper that peels off due to the intensity of heat within the hotel, and the constant nagging of the mosquito which he isn’t able to catch until it latches on to Audrey.Barton Fink is a 1991 film by The Coen Brothers. ![]() This seems to instill a sense of isolation in Barton, who is confined to a dull green colored room in an environment that is foreign to him. This picture symbolizes a sense of freedom, free from constraint and able to bask in the beauty of the world. There is solely one picture that depicts a sense of life which is a young woman looking out at the beach. Barton says, “Six please”, Pete gives out a sigh and his speech has long pauses, “Next stop…six.” Viewing Barton’s room, it is dreary. He serves only to guide Barton to his floor level which ultimately is a room that deteriorates and strains Barton’s creative writing process. Viewing Pete’s character (elevator man) he is lifeless in his facial expression. It’s eerie as Barton never hears any other guest besides Charlie Goodman. The hotel appears to be empty although there are several guests who bring out their shoes in front of the hotel door. What’s interesting to note is that the hotel scenery is a depiction of hell. Through the use of colors, items, and characters they depict what exactly Barton has succumbed to. The Coen brothers were intricate and meticulous with the setting of the film in order to shape Barton’s character. The final scene is Barton seeing the picture from the hotel come to life. Barton then gives his script to Lipnick in which he says his “story stinks.” Barton is then forced to still be on contract and all his material will go to Capitol pictures. He is then confronted by Karl Mundt who kills the two detectives and frees Barton from the steel frame that the detectives handcuffed him to. Barton uses the box as a source of inspiration and quickly finishes his script. Charlie then turns out to be Karl Mundt who mutilates woman. Barton goes back to his hotel where he is confronted by two detectives. Barton goes back to the hotel and Charlie tells Barton he has to go but gives him a package. Once Barton had to meet Lipnick, he says he’s not comfortable in describing his writing process as a step by step outline, Lipnick understands and defends Barton’s reasoning. Barton calls Charlie for helps and Charlie gets rid of the body but not the blood mattress. Audrey and Barton then have sex in which Barton wakes up and finds out that Audrey is dead. However, she notes how she wrote Lipnicks stuff. Barton panics and calls Audrey for help in providing him a source of inspiration. Barton is worried about getting it done since Lipnick wants to see Barton progress the next day. Mayhew gives him an address to visit him for some inspiration however, Mayhew turns out to be an abusive drunk to his secretary Audrey and has not written a hit in ages.īarton still does not have any material down and Bill tries to give him inspiration by having Barton watch a wrestling film. Barton attempts to seek inspiration from Mayhew who is a well-known writer in the industry. However, Barton goes on a passionate rant on what he’s trying to do for the common man. Charlie attempts to help Charlie in his creative process by insisting he has stories to tell. The person next door confronts Barton politely and the man introduces himself as Charlie. While trying to write, he hears noises next door which disrupt his creative flow and he proceeds to call the front desk to address this issue. Barton must write a wrestling film and he is conflicted as he is not familiar with this genre. Once registered, Barton sees his room, aging and bear with a picture of a woman enjoying the view of the beach. Barton is then at a run-down hotel in Hollywood which seems eerily empty were it not for the several shoes that were laid out outside guests doors. However, he takes the deal of $1,000 a week. After his celebration dinner, Barton’s friend tells him he has the opportunity to get a “Brief tenure in Hollywood.” Barton’s demeanor seems conflicted as state he is a brink away from success and creating a theatre for the common man. Barton is a renowned play wright in New York who does significantly well on his latest play target towards the common man. ![]()
