The politically correct leader who is applying duress would call it persuasion, the person under duress would call it manipulation at best, threatening at worst. Duress is a big deal because it is, as defined above, a form of coercion. The reason that duress is so different is that it is externally applied. Is it duress?ĭuress is a totally different kettle of fish. Those include breathing, affirmations and meditation and mindfulness (BAMM). Or it might be the fear that you experience when you need to do a public speech.Īction - If you are feeling stressed, there are a range of techniques that you can lean into to help you clear your mind and clear your emotional slate. Typically, when you are stressed, you will be berating yourself for not getting something done, or pushing yourself to meet a deadline, or cursing yourself for not being able to do a specific task and being worried about asking for help. That is the perfect example of how you can put enough stress on your body, that eventually it will shut down. ![]() Ask anyone in Japan about Karoshi (working themselves to death). Prolonged, or chronic stress, leads to a wide range of mental and physical and complications, including death. It's you sitting at your desk staring at a blank screen, trying to understand what they heck is going on around you, why you can’t think clearly, and why you can’t find a way to get into action. Externally, the stress might come from applied duress, it might come from worrying about the economy, it might come from worrying about your team, or it might come from having to write a COVID-19 response plan, when you have no idea where to start. In saying that, stress is very much the bodily reaction to either external or internal stimulus. It can be akin to anxiety or panic, and it affects people differently. In short, what that means is stress is very much an internal response. Stress is concerned with strain or pressure, while duress refers to wrongful or unlawful coercion.” The Merriam-Webster dictionary shares that “the phrase ‘under duress’ should not be confused with ‘under stress’. But is this pressure a form or stress or is it a type of duress? And does it matter? One thing at a time… Is it stress? With a crisis comes the requirement for leaders to stay in control, to have care factor for their teams, and be courageous enough to make the tough decisions that need to be made. Including how do they keep their workplaces safe how do they ask for proof of vaccinations, and the myriad of things that come with a pandemic, most of which we haven’t seen before (and hopefully won’t again). My coaching clients are talking about the COVID-19 ‘crisis’ that they are dealing with. So, you are feeling under pressure right now. ![]()
